15 September 2008
Gnaraloo will commence the Gnaraloo Marine Turtle Survival Program, under the guidance and direction of the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC), during 2008/09. The GMTSP will be based on the Ningaloo Turtle Program, a community monitoring partnership program in Exmouth between DEC, WWF – Australia, the Cape Conservation Group and Murdoch University.
The Gnaraloo turtle conservation program will involve beach monitoring of rookeries around Gnaraloo Bay by a 2-person team who will spend 2-3 hrs / day collecting data from November 2008 to February 2009. The work will generally involve monitoring of the numbers of turtle species that nest around Gnaraloo Bay, determining whether nesting attempts were successful, using a hand-held Global Positioning System to record nest locations & identifying and describing evidence of any feral predation or disturbance to nests.
As the commencement of the turtle season is near, we are currently in the process of selecting the Gnaraloo Turtle Tracker Team. The team will comprise of a Team Leader and a Support Person.
We are seeking an experienced person as the Team Leader. This person will be familiar with or already have undergone the necessary DEC turtle training and be experienced in the beach monitoring work component to ensure the accuracy, integrity and scientific application of the data collected during the season and to provide appropriate guidance, supervision and skill enhancement to the Support Person. This is important given the isolation of Gnaraloo and the resulting inability for the Gnaraloo Turtle Tracker Team to easily access DEC offices for guidance or clarification on any points of uncertainty or ambiguity from time to time during the season.
Subsidized accommodation and meals will be provided & travel between Perth and Gnaraloo may be arranged. Further requirements or arrangements may be negotiated directly with Paul Richardson, the Gnaraloo Station owner.
