If you are staying in Gnaraloo Homestead accommodation you will need to bring:
Bed Linen: the beds in your accommodation will be provided with a clean mattress cover - but no other bed linen is provided. You will need to bring pillows and either sheets and blankets/doonas or a sleeping bag. Towels are not provided please BYO.
Water: limited amounts of freshwater for drinking and cooking will be provided to your accommodation daily. However, if you want to wash in freshwater, or will be requiring large amounts for other purposes it is advisable to bring water with you. Remember to carry water in your car in case you have any problems on the journey here. All properties are supplied by bore water, which is safe for washing but causes some discolouration and odour in toilets and showers. NB: Cabins 1-6 do not currently have a hot water system, but the water is warm from heating by the sun in the pipes and there is a shared 24hr hot shower block available for your use.
The only exception to this is the New Homestead and Apartment, which have freshwater on tap (and freshwater showers!), but even here we will ask you to use water responsibility and your useage may be limited.
Gas Bottle: The New Homestead, Apartment, Fishing Lodge, Old Homestead, Shearing shed and Shearers Quarters are all currently provided with a gas BBQ, gas bottles for these are provided, but we ask that you use responsibly and turn off gas at the bottle after use. Excessive/irresponsible use will incur a charge.
Food and drink: the office at the homestead sells ice, milk, bread and bait if you run low, and a few other supplies are available at the 3 mile camp shop if you have forgotten that essential ingredient! (plus there is now a liquor license in place at the 3 mile shop - so they can sell you a cold beer !). However, we recommend that you plan to bring with you all food that you will need for your stay.
Sports Equipment: Currently there is no equipment available to hire on Gnaraloo. You will need to bring your own surfboards, body boards, snorkel or scuba equipment, fishing rods, bicycles etc etc. The 3 mile shop does stock some fishing supplies (hooks, sinkers, line etc) and sells repair kits if you damage your board.
Dogs: if you are bringing your dog please remember to let us know this on booking (as we try and keep a limit on the number of dogs on site at any one time) and please bring along a lead for when you are on the homestead or 3 mile sites (dogs must be on a lead at all times, and be cleaned up after) and a chain to keep your dog restrained at night or be prepared to keep it securely locked inside when you are sleeping. Any dog found worrying stock or wildlife will be shot.
Wood: you are welcome to BYO your own firewood (as long as you do not collect it on Quobba or Gnaraloo). If you are bringing collected dead wood from elsewhere we ask that you chop or bag it and declare it on arrival, this helps us to distinguish wood brought on to the property from any collected here (which we work hard to discourage). We also sell dry jarrah at both sites for $15 per bag.
As of 2008 any undeclared wood will be confiscated.
Food storage: at certain times of year you may experience a high level of mice, other small animals and insects - come prepared to be living close to nature. A few sealable plastic boxes can come in handy to keep dry foods in - which also helps us to discourage the critters and to reduce the amount of packaging being discarded on site.
Additional freezers: all properties (with the exception of the swag camps) are provided with at least one fridge and freezer. If you are bringing additional freezers with you, we ask that you let us know on arrival as this helps us plan for power requirements.
Mobile phones and laptops: The only mobiles that work here are CDMA and 3G/Next G, and even then the reception is patchy (try the fish cleaning area). There is now a wireless network and internet terminal available on the homestead site and at 3 mile camp (please click here for more details). There are outgoing public phones at both the Homestead and 3 Mile. Incoming emergency messages ONLY will be pssed of from the homestead office.
Boats: You are welcome to bring your boat, please let us know so that we can help you to plan parking. Please ask before or on arrival for information about fuel supplies, launching areas and marine sanctuary zones (or see DEC's info by clicking here or Dept of Fisheries info by clicking here)
Bikes, Quads, Jetskis etc: Motorbikes and quad bikes ridden with care and respect are welcome on the open tracks of Gnaraloo, however you are not permitted to ride them anywhere you could not take a car (please ask for a mud map) - anyone found doing so will have their bike impounded and there will be a charge to reclaim it at the end of your stay. NO RIDING ON THE BEACH, DUNES or any station use only track. If you are bringing a bike or quad to use here, please also bring a helmet as our main track is public road and subject to usual road laws.
Jetskis must be ridden with care for other water users and the reef - In swimming areas such as the 3 Mile Lagoon and the Bay Jetskis must slow right down and show some respect. Towing rules are the same as elsewhere - no towing if anyone in the line up is paddling...
Please do not bring:
Element appliances: Power is available in all properties (and some swag camps by arrangement) from 7am to 11pm. Any electrical appliance that works with an element is not good news on Gnaraloo - they are not suitable for our generator. These include: electric kettles, toasters, fryers and frypans, hair dryers, electric tea urns, element grills - if you are unsure whether your appliances will be suitable please do not hesitate to ask us. We provide kettles and toasters suitable for use on the gas cookers and ask that you work with us to keep our generator healthy so that can continue to provide suitable, stable power for all our fridges and freezers (not to mention the machine that makes our freshwater !).
Guns: just don't bring them, they will be confiscated and locked up for the duration of your stay.
Rubbish: we are starting work to reduce the environmental impact of the waste and rubbish left here by the increasing numbers of visitors to Gnaraloo. We ask that you consider what you bring with you, and how much of it will be left behind for disposal when you go home. Simple steps such as removing excess packaging from food, drink and other items and disposing of it elsewhere, or bringing one larger container, rather than several smaller ones can all help. We also ask that you do not bring larger items to be used here, with the intention of leaving them behind. Unless they are in good working order and can be used by others, take them home with you. Gnaraloo does not have a facility to dispose of hard rubbish such as broken surfboards, damaged tents and deckchairs etc, please plan to remove this rubbish with you when you leave and drop it in a town rubbish facility on your way home.
